New York City's next chief executive, Zohran Mamdani, has decided to make his home in the iconic Gracie Mansion, departing from the rent-stabilised apartment that became a focal point during his election bid.

A Traditional Abode

Dating back to 1799, Gracie Mansion has functioned as the official residence for nearly all New York City mayors after the post-war period.

Yet, Mamdani, for whom housing costs is a core issue, hesitated to declare his residency plans immediately after his triumph in November.

"This decision came down to keeping my family safe and the imperative to focusing my full attention on carrying out the agenda for affordability voters voted for," Mamdani said on Monday.

Thanking a Neighborhood

Mamdani lived in Astoria, Queens, a community renowned for its abundance of cultural enclaves and international dining.

"To my neighbors in Astoria: my gratitude for exemplifying what is great about New York City," Mamdani's statement said.

"Even though I'm moving there, the community will always live inside me and my work," he said.

Political Debate

During his race for mayor, Mamdani tied his key pledge – halting rent increases – to his personal living arrangements.

Yet his critics, mainly ex-governor Andrew Cuomo, criticised Mamdani for occupying the affordable housing despite the fact that he came from a prominent family.

Previous Exceptions

Some mayors have opted to reside at Gracie Mansion.

Michael Bloomberg, the business magnate, chose to live in his private home on Manhattan's Upper East Side for his time in office, which concluded in 2012.

In his view, Bloomberg felt it could serve as a venue for public city functions, and pushed for an extensive renovation of the aging mansion.

A Vastly Different Setting

As he settles into Gracie Mansion near his inauguration on 1 January, he will be surrounded by an environment very different than his humble Astoria home.

Featuring pale yellow exterior, emerald shutters, and pristine railings, Gracie Mansion is a picturesque home situated by the East River.

Inside, the first floor of the historically styled mansion is furnished to reflect the home's original era.

The property, which allegedly has five bedrooms, also boasts fortified protections to protect the mayor and his family.

Supernatural Speculation

Some residents have suggested that Gracie Mansion also has spiritual residents.

Chirlane McCray, the spouse of previous mayor Bill De Blasio, once said that they experienced doors opening and shutting on their own, and the floors emitted odd sounds.

Former Mayor Eric Adams was even more convinced. "No matter what anyone says," he declared in 2022. "It has spirits in there, man."

Affordable Housing Lifeline

His former home is rent-stabilized, meaning the city sets limits on how much building managers can hike the monthly cost each year.

New Yorkers view rent-stabilized housing as valuable lifelines as the cost of housing exceeds the average income.

It was reported Mamdani his rent was $2,300 each month for his apartment.

According to the property website Zillow, the average rent for a one-bedroom apartment in New York City is $3,500 a month.
