The British designer Antony Price, the groundbreaking British fashion designer responsible for many legendary styles associated with artists from David Bowie to Roxy Music and even royalty like Queen Camilla, has died at 80 years old.

He was celebrated for his sculptured silhouettes and dramatic aesthetics, such as the soft-colored suits that featured in rock band Duran Duran's classic music video for "their hit Rio".

"In a tribute, they called him a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance across their platforms."

This news arrives shortly after he debuted his latest collection in London, marking his return to the runway after over three decades. Artist Lily Allen modelled a dress evoking the famous black velvet "dress" historically worn by Diana, Princess of Wales.

An Enduring Influence

Born in Yorkshire in 1945, Price relocated to London in the early 1960s to enroll at the esteemed Royal College of Art.

Shortly after his graduation, he started his work in menswear at the company Stirling Copper and was the creator of the tight, button-detailed trousers that The Rolling Stones' frontman Mick Jagger sported during the iconic group's Gimme Shelter tour in the late sixties.

He established his eponymous line in 1979 and held his debut runway presentation a year later. The show opened with outfits on the famed model Jerry Hall, who was also seen in the marriage dress Price created for her for her wedding to Sir Mick Jagger.

Working with Legends

A key creative partner of musical chameleon David Bowie, Price was the mind behind the iconic jacket the star wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His trademark skill to blend elements of men's and women's fashion along with his technical proficiency in designing body-hugging looks cemented his status as a "genuine original," according to the UK's fashion authority.

In the 1990s, he began working on ensembles for Camilla, now Queen Consort, including several ensembles for her US tour following her marriage.

After a career spanning over fifty years, Price held his ultimate fashion presentation in London last month in conjunction with the design house 16Arlington.

  • Architectural Forms: Central to his design philosophy.
  • Performative Style: Shaping the look of rock and pop.
  • Genre-Blending Design: Creating a unique, androgynous style.
  • Clients from Stage to Palace: Including music legends and the future Queen Consort.

The industry laments the passing to a authentic original whose legacy on fashion and music remains deeply ingrained.
